5 CAREER LESSONS THAT STRENGTHEN RESILIENCE (NOT JUST RÉSUMÉ)
“Have I spent my life hating myself into accomplishment?”
I don’t know about that, but playing to not lose is never a good idea.
I do think that when success becomes the goal, you've lost the point of the game.
Here are 5 resilience-building lessons over my 30-year career journey:
Lesson 1: If winning is your motivation, you can’t enjoy playing…(cont.)
DIRECT EXPERIENCE IGNITES THE PATH TO RESILIENCE
One BIG CONCLUSION I’ve made after 25 years helping people grow and develop is that EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t listen to the thoughts and opinions of people you like and trust.
However, their experience will look different from yours. Their truth might be different, too.
Sources of inspiration are many. The one source of truth is your own.
WARNING: If there is a part of yourself that you are hiding from, it will not stay hidden for long. Not if you embrace these ideas.
RESILIENCE IN ACTION: LEVERAGE YOUR STRENGTHS TO SOLVE NEW CHALLENGES
“I’m on a mission to help people access the inner resources that got them to where they are now - some flying up the corporate ladder, others starting their own thing.
My philosophy is simple: reactivate the strengths (often superpowers) that helped them solve past problems to solve new ones.
Sometimes a new role requires a new skill or mindset. Fortunately, strengths adapt and expand.”
WHAT YOUR CHILDHOOD HEROES REVEAL ABOUT WHO YOU ARE TODAY
“…we mature and accumulate experience and hopefully wisdom as we age – our heroes change, however.
A wall poster of Luke Skywalker might raise some eyebrows; one of Gandhi, probably not.
If you believe time is non-linear, like in dreams or other altered states, those childhood passions, including heroes, hold clues about who you are today.”
3 POWERFUL WAYS TO CULTIVATE CURIOSITY AND SPARK REAL GROWTH
To cultivate means to acquire and develop (quality or skill).
First you need to recognize that cultivation is not a quick or easy process.
From making wine to mastering the game of chess, time, effort and perseverance are 3 BIG success factors.
The best starting point is a willingness to experiment with eyes and ears WIDE open.
Here are 3 ways with 3 easy-to-execute experiments to cultivate this INVALUABLE skill.
SIMPLICITY WINS: THE SMART WAY TO REDUCE COMPLEXITY
How can you reduce complexity for others?
First of all, make clear and simple rules.
If things aren’t clear, simplicity is out of reach.
So when looking at rules, expectations or anything else, be as clear as you possibly can!
