RESILIENCE STARTS WITH KNOWING YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF

For most of my 20's I was On the Road - Far East Asia was my Mexico. (Jack Kerouac as spirit guide)

Kerouac had jazz and beat poetry; I had The Beastie Boys and Dostoevsky.

With deep dives into Zen Buddhism and Russian literature, my inner exploration was just as alive as my outer one.

Teaching & traveling in Asia provided endless time for reading and writing - the main attraction to life abroad.

I'd been stuck behind a desk in an "air conditioned nightmare" - stealing a description from my role model, Henry Miller.

Miller up and left his life in New York choosing Paris in the 1920's as his landing pad.

My outer nomadic life ended soon after my 30th birthday.

The inner one is alive and well, however.

Recent deep dives into Human Design and The Enneagram are living proof.

This is the why I choose the word "exploration" when describing myself.

If you had to choose a few words to describe yourself, what would they be?

THOUGHT EXPERIMENT: Think of 4-5 words that describe the core pillars that sustain you - words that speak to who you are and what makes you tick.

Another one of mine is "connection".

It's important for me to be connected to people but also to make new connections and prioritize existing ones.

As an independent contractor, relationships are my social capital - two of my current clients are from connections made ten years ago.

To Be Magnetic calls it your Authentic Code (company, podcast, app).

What acronym might your code get?

Starting with “connection” and ending on “exploration”, I landed on CASIE.

Following C is A for “admiration”:

It's important for me to be seen as smart, funny and competent.

I love to be admired.

Recognition is important too, but not as important as the admiration of the people I care about.

I spent way too much of my life worrying about what other people thought of me – even people I didn’t care about!

I wish I no longer cared what people think.

Unfortunately, I do.

Fortunately, I’ve let go of the people I don’t care about.

S for “stability”:

Things don't always have to be the same, but I need a few things to be stable to feel safe - house, car, job.

For sure this has to do with getting older – I didn’t need much beyond my journal and a good book when I was younger.

I love when Ethan Hawke tells Winona Ryder in Reality Bites that all they need is a“couple of smokes, a cup of coffee, and a little bit of conversation”.

“You and me and five bucks.”

I knew Hawke’s slacker Troy wasn’t real.

Nevertheless, I wanted to be that guy.

I even grew my hair out like him.

I for “immersion”:

There's nothing I love more that diving into a good book or TV series.

When I'm inspired by something or someone, I go "all in".

The curiosity that started with monastic life and Russian novels lives on.

If curious, check out THE RISE & FALL OF TV’S GOLDEN AGEin intelligent media - a blog about intelligent new books, tunes, film & TV.

CONFESSION - No new posts for a few years…a little thing happened in 2020 that changed the game for all of us.

E for” exploration”:

‍As seen in my former travels and choice of profession, I'm curious about people and places around me.

But also, my thoughts and feelings.

‍Human Design helped me understand why I stop and start a lot of things.

More importantly, it gave me permission to do this.

‍I’ve never written a novel, but I’ve started several.

I don’t consider myself an entrepreneur, but I think like one – coming up with lots of ideas comes naturally.

‍Two books, three online tests and one AI-enhanced deep dive convinced me that The Enneagram Psychometric was the missing piece in my facilitation toolbox.

‍The interrupted self-discoveries inspired by Human Design and The Enneagram underpin the E.

If you consider that I’ve lived outside my home for 30 years, you see I’m not attached to the Status Quo.

‍HINT: Getting out of your Comfort Zone is crucial for personal growth.

Authentic Code, Type Indicator (letter, color, number) - if something increases self-awareness, it’s valuable - no matter what you call it!

That is, the real you – without work or other influence.

If it provides insight into who you are and how you tick, great.

Knowing yourself is the beginning of wisdom, according to that clever Greek guy.

It's also a key building block for resilience.

Once you understand yourself, you understand others - people lacking self-awareness make horrible People Managers.

The key to Leading with EQ is the ability to manage your own emotions.

How can you help your team manage a conflict if you don't see your part in it?

After all, you are the team lead.

You might not be the root cause but it happened on your watch.

Whatever code or combination of letters/colors/numbers you land on, it should be based on who you are and what makes you you.

Authenticity the goal.

Resilience starts with knowing your authentic self.

If you’d like my guidance to magnify your authentic self, let’s talk.

Drop me a note and we’ll set up a time to connect.
